There are many things I love about growing up on Guam. Our culture still incorporates some ancient ways, but our culture has also been influenced by those that colonized and occupied us. The other wonderful aspect of life on Guam is that it is such a small island, one person's memories is shared by hundreds, if not thousands of others.
For instance, many who grew up on Guam know these coconut and chocolate covered yeast doughnuts. These were definitely not in the ancient diet, and I don't even think it was a Spanish or Mexican influence. But low and behold, a lot of us islanders LOVE IT! And so it is a happy, shared part of island life on Guam.
Winchell's Donuts used to be the best place on Guam for doughnuts. However, have you had the hot doughnuts from Crown Bakery? OMG, those are the bomb!
This was my first go-around with this type of yeast doughnut. It was good, just not great for my particular taste buds. The family loved it, but I think it needs an extra egg, bit more sugar, and a little more rough handling when I knead it. The upside is, that I've finally gotten to this doughnut. I'll eventually get around to finalizing it.
I have so many childhood memories about food, and that means the list of recipes to share goes on and on!
Do you know what happened on Guam after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor? If you are interested, check out a preview of my romance novel set in Guam during WWII.
