HOTNU BAKERY - INARAJAN
SUMMER 2015
I don't even know what to say! There is just something about Hotnu's bread that screams "Welcome home." Hotnu is the Chamorro word for oven. Mr. Tony Manglona, owner and baker, is the gentleman in the photo above. He is super sweet. Here's an interview from KUAM:
Growing up, there was always Chamorro sweet bread at big parties. It's uncanny how distinct the flavor and texture of Chamorro sweet bread is. Nope, it's not light and fluffy like King's Hawaiian bread. Rather, it's dense, yet soft, and there's just something about it like no other roll I've had. And Hotnu's sweet bread is the best Chamorro sweet bread I've tasted! Even a year and change since I've had it, I can still remember it's taste and texture.
Hotnu bakes up regular buttered bread, coconut bread, cinnamon rolls, and pizza. The bread is AMAZING. I didn't have a chance to try the pizza, but baked in a stone oven, I'm sure it's out of this world. This is not your fancy-shmansy bakery, but it's the best bakery to buy THE bread on Guam. There is no place in Hotnu to sit and eat, but drive just a block down to Gef Pago, grab a couple of drinks at the mom n pop store, eat your bread, and enjoy the gorgeous sights and sounds of Inarajan Bay!
Hotnu is housed within the George Flores Old Store and History Center, run by the incredible Judy Flores. My dad had a chance to talk with Judy, and he was very much impressed with her fluent Chamorro. While waiting for your bread, grab some great prints and other gifts in the history center. Judy and her family have put so much time and effort into keeping Inarajan's history alive for all of us to enjoy.
I would call before heading down. The bread and pizzas go fast so be sure to get there as soon as possible. Locals drive by and grab them quick. Maybe ask if you can place an order and pick it up. The menu and hours are below, but may change. Call first!
Directions: drive down to Inarajan, you'll see the signs.
